Inspiration for Tea Strainer

Upon investigating, I found a few strainers I thought were really cute. I wasn't sure where I wanted to take this project but I think the time constraint of the semester made my decision for me. Simple, but clean. Anyway, here are a few photos I found.

Finished my neckpiece!

So I finished my neckpiece today! I was pretty excited about it. Back to the studio tomorrow to get lots of work done on my strainer hopefully. So here is a picture of the finished work. I threw in some pictures of my candle holder as well since I never posted anything about it.

End of the semester

The end of the semester is coming and its crunch time. I'm trying to get both remaining projects (Ponoko Neck piece and Tea strainer) finished by about the middle of next week so that I do not have to completely stress about them when I am trying to study for all the other tests coming up! Here are a few pictures of the neck piece. It's not quite finished. Still have one or two things so problem solve. Hope you like it!

Jaime Salm Lecture: Mio Culture, Why I love design

On Thursday Oct. 8th I went to a lecture by Jaime Salm. He talked about designing using sustainable resources and waste. This tied in with the trip we took to NYC because it had a lot of the same ideas behind it. Why waste? For example, a company named Bloomberg had 12 palettes of paper to dispose of. Instead of simply throwing it away, they had Jaime's Company, Mio Culture, design chairs for the workplace. I found the lecture interesting because besides talking about what the products are, he took us through the process of how he ended up with a successful business today.

Trip to NYC

Ok, so back in September the jewelry department took a trip to NYC to visit the Cooper Hewitt Museum. I have to admit..I found the trip much more interesting than i originally thought it would be. The Exhibition we went to see is called Design for a Living World. The idea behind it was to create products from sustainable resources. Some areas that the products came from were Costa Rica, Australia, Alaska, and China. My favorite product was the first one in the exhibit. Organic wool. The artist made large sheep rugs made from organic wool. I found the process interesting and have to say...i loved the rugs. She used knitting needles the size of yardsticks! The wool came from a sheep farm in Idaho. We also went to Govenor's Island which was having a show that also featured incredibly comfy looking felted wool sheep rugs. Besides the rugs, Designs for a living world also had bamboo furniture, a dress made out of salmon, and black pearl jewelry. Altogether it was a very interesting and insightful exhibit and I would recommend it to others.

Some Thoughts on the welding project...

I have been throwing around a few ideas for the welding project but have not yet come up with anything I particularly liked. Luckily, google was able to help me out. Here are a few images that I particularly liked.

Photographs for the Pendent project..

These are ten photos of different types of neck pieces through the years. My favorites are the ones by Alexander Calder (the last 3 pictures) , and the gold crochet piece. Hope you enjoy!

Putting together my design

I came across one of these images and suddenly I knew what I was going to do. I loved the idea of the candles hanging on the wall. So I found a few more and slowly began to put together my idea. I can't make something of that size...it is way to time consuming so I shrank down the amount of overlapping shapes. To make it more my own I wanted to add a design in the middle of some of the shapes. The squares with shapes would also hold the candle holders to throw a design on the wall.
